While the topic has been in my head for quite some time, the title for this song was inspired by Barry Schwartz’ wonderful book of the same name.
This one, once again, was exceptionally difficult for me to make. I have had to scrap lots of ideas for riffs and melodies until finally this monster of a riff came to me. Actually it all started out with the drum track but that’s a story for the liner notes…
The lyrics:
the paradox of choice
lonely at the crossroads
the world is at your feet
every path wide open
to pursue what you seek
no chains to hold you back
you’ve chosen to be free
this is your own life
and your responsibility
no one else to stop you
no one else to judge you
no one else to blame
but yourself
what could have been
what might have been
curse the inner voice
eternal unhappiness
the paradox of choice
and when you stop
you sense the fear
what have you done?
what brought you here?
for every path you take
there’s three you leave behind
you hope this is the way
but you don’t know what you’ll find
freedom has you paralyzed
you’ve yet to plant the seed
forging your own destiny
is a fearsome thing indeed
uncertainty’s a challenge
but you can’t be free without
it’s a long way to the bottom
of the abyss of doubts
what could have been
what might have been
curse the inner voice
eternal unhappiness
the paradox of choice
